Heads Up Neighbors - New Scam Making the Rounds

If a pop-up suddenly flashes on your screen saying it’s the Social Security Administration and claims there are “multiple charges” on your bank account or that your identity’s been stolen - that’s a scam.

The crooks will try to follow up (on-screen or by phone) and say they’ll “refund” you with gift cards. They’ll tell you to buy the cards, read them the numbers, or even mail cards they claim need “activating.” Government agencies and real banks never issue refunds by gift card. Ever.

What to do:

• Don’t click. Don’t call the number in the pop-up.

• If they ring you, hang up immediately.

• Report it to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office: 910-455-3113.

UPS out, Coastal Carolina in at Camp Davis

From distribution to education: Holly Ridge okays $1.5M deal for a new workforce center.

That UPS facility planned for Camp Davis Industrial Park isn’t happening. Holly Ridge bought the lot back from UPS in August and, on Sept. 9, the Town Council voted 4 -1 to sell Lot 14 to the Coastal Carolina Community College Board of Trustees for $1.5 million. (Councilman Joshua Patti voted no.)

Why the change?
UPS told the town the project isn’t feasible right now given the economy and recent distribution center closures. Disappointing, sure - but big companies adjust to the market.

What’s coming instead?
CCCC plans a workforce development center on the site - think shop space plus classrooms for OSHA, equipment/maintenance training, and more. The college says it will partner with other businesses in the park to train their employees.

Community reaction
Resident and mayoral candidate Dorothy Royal called the college “an asset,” and said she’d like to see even more community-friendly uses in the park - pointing to Jacksonville’s Burton Park (Gov’t Center, Skills Center, bike park) as a model.

Bottom line: no UPS hub - for now - but a new training center that could feed local industries and put more skills (and jobs) within reach.

Earlier this month, the European Union banned the use of a chemical called TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) in gel nail polish.

Showing an abundance of caution, the regulations were made in response to animal studies indicating TPO might cause issues with fertility and reproductive health — but the ingredient remains unrestricted in the US.

That’s not so unusual. While the EU has banned over 1,600 chemicals from use in personal care products, according to the Environmental Working Group, the United States has blacklisted fewer than a dozen. Continue reading . .
