PATRIOT DAY OBSERVANCE

Thursday, September 11, 2025

8:15 AM - Lejeune Memorial Gardens, Jacksonville,NC

The Onslow Civic Affairs Committee invites you and your loved ones to the annual Patriot Day Observance at the 9/11 Memorial Beam at Lejeune Memorial Garden. This solemn observance remembers the fallen at the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the first responders who came to their aid, and the military who responded after. Open to the Public.

🕊 In Remembrance of September 11th

More than two decades have passed since that clear September morning when our nation was forever changed. The tragic events of 9/11 claimed thousands of innocent lives and left deep scars on families, communities, and our collective heart. Yet even in the midst of unimaginable loss, we witnessed extraordinary acts of courage and selflessness - first responders who ran toward danger, neighbors who reached out to help, and a country that stood together in grief and determination.

Today, may we continue to carry forward that same spirit of compassion, strength, and resolve - not just in remembrance of the past, but in the way we live, care for our neighbors, and cherish the freedoms so many have sacrificed to protect.

And as we reflect, may we also remember the unity that brought us together in those first fragile weeks after the tragedy. Let us hold onto that spirit with faith and prayer, choosing grace over division and kindness over discord - so that the legacy of 9/11 calls us not only to remember, but to live as one people bound by hope, healing, and love for one another.

- Roy Shipley

  Editor, The Onslow Insider

I need to take a moment to address something heavy on my heart. Yesterday, on the eve of 9/11 when we should have been remembering the hatred that resulted in the horrendous events and loss of life of that terrible day - and the way we as a country came together in the following weeks - Charlie Kirk was assassinated in Utah. He was only 31 years old, a Christian, a husband, and a father of two toddlers.

Like Martin Luther King Jr., Charlie Kirk never advocated violence, but he was killed for his political stance. The person who pulled the trigger is a coward. He hid in the shadows and ran. That coward’s bullet did not silence Charlie Kirk’s voice - it ignited a movement. Because his fight is our fight.

This country has got to come together. We can’t keep letting hate and division tear us apart. My prayers are with his family, his friends, and every single one of us who knows deep down that America is better than this.

I imagine Charlie kissed his wife and kids goodbye before he left for his speaking engagement in Utah. I imagine too that Charlie's wife had no idea that that would be the very last kiss they would share, or that she would never see him alive again. Life is fleeting and we are only here for a short time, relatively speaking. No one knows when our time is up.

Let's not spend the limited time we have here being hateful and discordant, but rather, let's all try to get along, be open to morality, civil debate, and like the good book recommends - let's all try to love one another rather than spread hatred and strife. Pray for our communities and our country.

Rest In Peace Charlie Kirk

TIP: Beware of "Romance Scams!"

"Accidental" Text Messages -

Have you gotten a text message that seems genuine, but it also appears to be intended for someone else? It might say something like, "Sorry I'm running late, I'll be there in 15 minutes." Not wanting to be rude, you respond to tell the sender they've got the wrong number.

These wrong number texts are often the first step in a romance or employment scam. Although there's sometimes a scammer on the other end from the start, scammers can also use AI messaging bots to target thousands of people at a time.

Romantic scams, or "sweetheart scams" involve criminals creating fake online profiles to build a romantic relationship with a victim, then manipulating them into sending money or personal information by faking an emergency or urgent need. Scammers often use stolen photos and excuses for not meeting in person, such as being in the military or working overseas. You can avoid becoming a victim by never sending money to someone you haven't met in person, being skeptical of quick declarations of love, performing a reverse image search on profile pictures, refusing to send gift cards or wire money, and always talking to a trusted person about suspicious situations.

TransUnion Data Breach

Exposes 4.4 Million Americans’

Sensitive Information

On 28 July 2025, credit reporting agency TransUnion suffered a major data breach linked to a third-party application, exposing the personal information of 4,461,511 individuals. The incident was discovered on 30 July, and the company began notifying affected customers in late August.

While credit reports and core credit files were not compromised, attackers accessed names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, billing addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Security experts believe the extortion group ShinyHunters carried out the attack, likely through third-party integrations or OAuth-connected apps disguised as Salesforce tools.

This method allowed persistent access to customer records and ties the incident to a broader extortion-as-a-service campaign. Experts note that the exposure of Social Security numbers makes this breach far more damaging than many other recent incidents, heightening the risk of identity theft and financial fraud.

TransUnion, which manages financial data for over 260 million Americans, is offering affected customers two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection. At least one law firm has already begun investigating the breach, with the possibility of a class action lawsuit.
