American Heart Association - New High Blood Pressure Guidelines 

New AHA Guidelines on High Blood Pressure

The American Heart Association (AHA), in partnership with the American College of Cardiology (ACC), has released updated guidelines for the management of high blood pressure. These guidelines call for earlier intervention, often including both lifestyle changes and medication.

Why It Matters

High blood pressure (stage 1 or stage 2 hypertension) affects nearly half of all U.S. adults (46.7%). It remains the leading cause of death both in the U.S. and worldwide.

Blood Pressure Categories (same as 2017)

• Normal: less than 120/80 mm Hg

• Elevated: 120–129 systolic and <80 diastolic

• Stage 1 Hypertension: 130–139 systolic or 80–89 diastolic

• Stage 2 Hypertension: ≥140 systolic or ≥90 diastolic

What’s New in 2025

• Earlier Treatment: Doctors are advised to act sooner with lifestyle guidance and medications.

• Lifestyle Reinforcement: Strong emphasis on healthy diet, physical activity, and weight management.

• PREVENT Risk Calculator: The first tool to combine cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic data to estimate overall heart disease risk.

• Cognitive Health Link: New evidence ties high blood pressure to dementia and cognitive decline.

• Updated Testing: Recommended lab tests now include markers for kidney health.
